Is "Lack of Chargers" still stopping You From Truly Enjoying EVs?

Should you be concerned about the lack of EV infrastructure in Singapore?

No. The current EV infrastructure can support more than twice the number of EVs already on the roads in Singapore.

EV Chargers Singapore

Charger to EV ratio

In 2021, Singapore announced that it has set a roadmap to install a total of 60,000 chargers around the country by 2030. 40,000 of these chargers will be in public carparks and the remaining in private premises. However, most of these chargers are the slower AC chargers.

The global average charger to EV ratio is 1:10, and the average charge power is 2.4kW per EV. These are the baseline numbers used to determine sufficiency of infrastructure.

With a total car population of about 1,000,000, by 2030, Singapore will be ready for an adoption rate of more than 60%. Of course, the more important figure is the average charge power per EV. Considering an average of 25kW per charger, we will be looking at 2.5kW per EV.

As of Jan 2024, there are a total of 1,370 Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) and 16,716 Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) in Singapore. In 2023, there were already more than 3,600 chargers in Singapore. This means that theoretically, our infrastructure can support at least 36,000 EVs.

The total population of EVs in Singapore only accounts for 50% of what our infrastructure is capable of. This means that Singapore has the capacity to have twice the number of EVs we have now. We still have lots of room for expansion.

We have the Infrastructure. What is stopping you?

We have sufficient infrastructure to support the adoption of EVs in Singapore. Many drivers we talk to still cite "lack of infrastructure" as the key reason to why they do not take up EVs. This reason was probably valid 3 years ago. Today, the speed at which EV chargers have been deployed have left adoption numbers lagging behind instead.

If you are still on the fence of making the decision to purchase EVs, perhaps trying out PlugShare will help you make the right decision. Through PlugShare, you can find all the publicly available chargers in your area. You can even look for chargers available in Malaysia if you are keen on planning a road trip. Don't let "lack of infrastructure" stop you from truly enjoying the benefits of EVs.
