Discovering the True Range of the FR601 Lorry: A Journey of Surprises

There's a saying in Mandarin: "卖花人说花香,卖菜人讲菜嫩," which translates to "A florist will say that his flowers are fragrant. A vegetable seller will say that his vegetables are tender." At EcoSwift, I take pride in providing our customers with the most objective viewpoints. This commitment led me to an exciting journey to uncover the true range of the FR601 lorry.

The Beginning of Our Adventure

SANY claims that the FR601 has a range of 240 km. However, without knowing the test conditions, I decided to embark on a mission to test the truck on Singapore's roads and provide a more accurate estimation for our customers.

Our standard test route at EcoSwift consists of three segments: highways (41%), arterial roads (22%), and city roads (37%). This route reflects real-world vehicle usage in Singapore and promises the most accurate results.

The First Test

SANY FR601 without weight

Our journey began with an empty truck, equipped only with the standard open cargo deck. Cruising through our test route, we averaged around 248 Wh/km. This was a delightful surprise, as it suggested a range of around 300 km with a remaining battery charge of 10%. I felt a surge of excitement, knowing we were off to a promising start.

The Unexpected Twist

Next, we loaded the truck with 2,400 kg, bracing ourselves for a significant drop in range—perhaps by 30%. However, reality had other plans.

On the highway segment, to my astonishment, the truck used less energy compared to when it was empty. It seemed the additional weight helped regenerate energy while going downhill or slowing down. The city segment mirrored this phenomenon, with almost the same energy usage as the empty truck. It was only on the arterial roads that we saw a noticeable increase in energy consumption.

Back at the office, we poured over the data, our minds buzzing with disbelief. Was this a fluke? Determined to validate our findings, I decided to test the truck again the next day, aiming to deplete the battery as close to 0% as possible.

The Thrilling Climax

So off we went on another test run, this time pushing the limits. After running the test route twice over two days, clocking an incredible 245 km, the battery still indicated 26%. We continued driving around near our building, determined to drain the battery completely. As the battery level dropped to 1%, we were 3 km away from our building. My heart pounded with anxiety, but we made it back to the charger just in time.

With the battery finally depleted, I glanced at the meter in utter disbelief. It showed that we had traveled 290 km in total—50 km more than SANY's promise—while fully laden with a counterweight at the back!

A Curious Conclusion

Reflecting on our findings, we realized the minimal difference in energy consumption between the fully laden and empty states was due to the percentage difference in weight. For the EV490 prime mover, fully laden meant the vehicle weighed at least 500% more than when empty. In contrast, the FR601 weighed only 100% more when fully laden, explaining the negligible difference in consumption figures.

Just like the florist who boasts about his flowers' fragrance and the vegetable seller who praises his produce's tenderness, companies naturally highlight their strengths. But at EcoSwift, we go the extra mile to ensure our customers receive the most accurate and objective information. Our range test of the FR601 lorry is a testament to our commitment to transparency and reliability.
